As I prepare to close Kiss of Silk after 10 years, I've received several questions about product shelf life, storage, and how long your favorites may remain fresh, especially from those planning to purchase multiple products during our final Legacy Pre-Order. 🥹💕

What's New for the Legacy Collection? 🌿
For this special release, I've made thoughtful adjustments to select formulations with ingredient stability and long-term product quality in mind.
One of those changes is incorporating jojoba seed oil into select products. Jojoba is known for its excellent resistance to oxidation, making it a wonderful choice for maintaining the quality of oil-based ingredients over time.
For example, my Whole Body Deodorant Butter previously featured a blend of pomegranate seed oil and jojoba oil. For the Legacy Collection, I've chosen to use jojoba seed oil alongside meadowfoam seed oil instead. Both are valued for their oxidative stability, while continuing to provide the smooth, conditioning qualities you've come to love!
Some products may also arrive in amber-colored packaging, depending on the product and packaging availability. Amber containers help limit light exposure, which can contribute to the gradual degradation of certain ingredients.
Products intended for use in the shower, bulk refills, and certain other formats may continue to use alternative packaging better suited to their intended use.
These adjustments build upon the same care and attention I've always put into my formulations, with additional consideration for long-term product quality. However, they are not a guarantee of an extended shelf life.
Recommended Freshness Periods ✨
As a general guide, I recommend enjoying most Kiss of Silk Legacy skincare, body care, and cleansing products within approximately 6 months after opening for optimal freshness.
Our alcohol-based Sugarcane Perfume Essences and Room + Linen Mists have a recommended freshness period of approximately 12 months after opening when properly stored.
Wax Melts and Shower Steamer Powder also have a suggested fragrance freshness period of approximately 12 months after opening.
What About Unopened Products?
Unopened products may maintain their freshness and quality for longer periods when properly stored, particularly certain alcohol-based fragrances and oil-based formulations.
Their longevity depends on several factors, including their ingredients, storage conditions, and exposure to heat, light, and moisture.
Please Note: These are general freshness and usage recommendations, not guaranteed expiration dates. Products may maintain their quality beyond these suggested periods, but opening a product does not reset its overall age or guarantee an additional period of freshness.
Proper storage and handling play important roles in maintaining product quality over time.
Product-by-Product Freshness & Care Guide
Whole Body Deodorant Butter
Recommended Freshness: Approximately 6 months after opening
A little goes a long way! Depending on your application habits, one jar typically lasts:
4+ months: Once-daily underarm use
1.5–2+ months: Twice-daily underarm use
1+ month: Frequent twice-daily full-body use
Actual usage will vary depending on how much you apply.
Keep jars tightly closed between uses, avoid introducing moisture, and store in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Body + Hand Cream & Baby Butter
Recommended Freshness: Approximately 6 months after opening
Store containers in a cool, dry place and keep them tightly closed between uses.
Use clean, dry hands when handling the products and avoid introducing water into the containers.
Because these formulations contain botanical oils and butters, exposure to excessive heat may cause softening or changes in texture.
Body Oil & Botanical Perfume Oil
Recommended Freshness: Approximately 6 months after opening
Keep bottles tightly closed and store them away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture.
Botanical oils and fragrance blends may gradually change in scent, color, or consistency as they age.
The use of oxidation-resistant carrier oils can help support long-term ingredient stability, although natural changes may still occur over time.
pH Balanced Cream Soap, Body Wash Bars & Foaming Sugar Exfoliators
Recommended Freshness: Approximately 6 months after opening or beginning use
pH Balanced Cream Soap: Keep the container tightly closed between uses and avoid introducing shower water into the product.
pH Balanced Body Wash Bars: Allow bars to drain and dry thoroughly between uses. Store on a draining soap holder away from standing water to help maintain their texture and extend their usable life.
pH Balanced Foaming Sugar Exfoliators: Use clean, dry hands and avoid introducing water into the jar. Keep tightly closed between uses.
Liquid Black Soap & Wet Lotus
Recommended Freshness: Approximately 6 months after opening
Keep bottles tightly closed between uses and store them away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Avoid contaminating bottle openings or transferring products into unclean containers.
Sugarcane Perfume Essence & Room + Linen Mist
Recommended Freshness: Approximately 12 months after opening
These alcohol-based fragrance products may maintain their scent and overall quality for longer periods under favorable storage conditions.
However, fragrance blends can gradually change in scent, color, or intensity as they age.
Keep bottles tightly closed and store them away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, sparks, and open flames.
Please Note: Room + Linen Mist is intended for home fragrance use on suitable linens and in the air, not as a body perfume.
Wax Melts & Shower Steamer Powder
Suggested Fragrance Freshness: Approximately 12 months after opening
These products have different storage needs from traditional skincare and body care products.
Wax Melts: Store in their original packaging in a cool, dry location away from heat and direct sunlight. Fragrance intensity may gradually change or fade over time.
Shower Steamer Powder: Keep tightly sealed in a cool, dry environment until use. Exposure to moisture may prematurely activate the ingredients, causing clumping, hardening, or reduced performance.
Both may maintain their fragrance or performance beyond the suggested freshness period under favorable conditions.
How to Store Your Kiss of Silk Products Properly
Proper storage plays an important role in maintaining the overall freshness, fragrance, texture, and performance of your products.
For the best experience:
Store unopened products in a cool, dry, dark place.
Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat, and frequent temperature changes.
Keep jars, bottles, and bulk refills tightly closed between uses.
Use clean, dry hands when handling products in jars.
Avoid introducing water or outside contaminants into products.
Allow solid cleansing bars to drain and dry thoroughly between uses.
Keep Sugarcane Perfume Essences and Room + Linen Mists away from heat, sparks, and open flames.
Following these simple practices can help maintain product quality while you enjoy your Kiss of Silk favorites.
How Can You Tell When a Product Has Gone Bad?
Over time, certain ingredients may naturally change as a product ages. While not every change indicates spoilage, there are a few signs worth watching for.
Changes in Scent
One of the more noticeable signs of oil oxidation is a change in smell.
For example, oils that have become rancid may develop an unpleasant sour, stale, waxy, or old-crayon-like odor that differs noticeably from the product's original scent.
Unexpected Changes in Appearance or Texture
Significant, unexpected discoloration, unusual separation, or changes in consistency may indicate deterioration.
Keep in mind that some natural ingredients, botanical extracts, and butters may cause harmless variations in color or texture, so it's important to distinguish normal product characteristics from unexpected changes.
Visible Signs of Contamination
Unusual fuzzy spots, mold-like growth, or other foreign material are signs that a product should no longer be used.
If you notice unusual odors, unexpected changes, or signs of contamination, discontinue use.
What I've Personally Observed Over the Years
One of the things I've always enjoyed doing throughout my years of running Kiss of Silk is keeping products from previous collections and formulations.
Part of it is sentimental (I love looking back at my creations! 🥹), but I also enjoy observing how products maintain their scent, appearance, texture, and performance over extended periods.
I still have products dating back to some of my earliest years of Kiss of Silk!
For example, I recently revisited an unopened Java Chai Deodorant Butter that I originally made in March 2024. When I opened it in October 2026, more than two and a half years later, it still maintained its familiar scent and consistency. When I used it, it also performed just as beautifully as I remembered! The oldest product I’ve been shown was my Enchanted Forest Body Butter that was made almost 4-5 years ago from when I was shown at a market I attended. AND it was still being used and though the scent had noticeably faded over the years, I was still able to recognize the fresh and earthy notes.
I've also received messages from several customers sharing that their deodorants have maintained their quality for over a year. Some have even brought their older Kiss of Silk products to my markets to show me that they're still enjoying creations they purchased years ago!
Hearing and seeing those experiences has been incredibly encouraging.
Of course, these personal observations don't establish a guaranteed multi-year shelf life, and individual experiences may vary depending on storage conditions, handling, and other factors.
My goal is to share what I've experienced throughout my years of formulating while providing helpful information and realistic expectations for caring for your products.
